چکیده

Galaxies behind the Milky Way suffer size reduction and dimming due to their obscuration by dust in the disk of our Galaxy. The degree of obscuration is wavelength dependent. It decreases towards longer wavelengths. Compared to the optical, the Near InfraRed (NIR) Ks band extinction is only ≈ 10% that of the B band. This makes NIR surveys well suited for galaxy surveys close to the Galactic Plane where extinction is severe. While Galactic obscuration is less prominent in the NIR it is not negligible. In this paper we derive empirical relations to correct isophotal radii and magnitudes of galaxies observed in the NIR for foreground absorption. We simulate extinction in the J , H and Ks bands on 64 (unobscured) galaxies from the 2MASS Large Galaxy Atlas (Jarrett et al. 2003). We propose two methods for the extinction correction, the first is optimized to provide the most accurate correction and the second provides a convenient statistical correction that works adequately in lower extinction regions. The optimized correction utilizes the galaxy surface brightness, either the disk central surface brightness, μ0, or the combined disk plus bulge central surface brightness, elliptical and disk/spiral Hubble types. A detailed comparison between the different methods and their accuracy is provided.

Dust Properties of Ngc 4753

We report BV R surface photometry of a lenticular galaxy, NGC 4753 with prominent dust lanes. We have used the multicolor broadband photometry to study dust-extinction as a function of wavelength and derived the extinction curve. We find the extinction curve of NGC 4753 to be similar to the Galactic extinction curve in the visible region which implies that the sizes of dust grains responsible f...

Mapping the Spatial Distribution of Dust Extinction in Ngc959 Using Broadband Visible and Mid-ir Filters

We present a method to estimate and map the two-dimensional distribution of dust extinction in the late-type spiral galaxy NGC959 from the theoretical and observed flux ratio of optical V and mid-IR (MIR) 3.6μm images. Our method is applicable to both young and old stellar populations for a range of metallicities, and is not restricted to lines-of-sight toward star-formation (SF) regions. We ex...

A Bridge from Optical to Infrared Galaxies: Explaining Local Properties, Predicting Galaxy Counts and the Cosmic Background Radiation

We give an explanation for the origin of various properties observed in local infrared galaxies, and make predictions for galaxy counts and cosmic background radiation (CBR), by a new model extended from that for optical/near-infrared galaxies. Important new characteristics of this study are that (1) mass scale dependence of dust extinction is introduced based on the size-luminosity relation of...

The Iras Bright Galaxy Sample. v. Multibeam Photometry of Galaxies

Forty-seven galaxies from the IRAS Bright Galaxy Sample with infrared luminosities Lm > 10 1 Lq have been measured at 1.3, 1.65, and 2.2 ¡im with beam diameters of 17", 33", and 55". These measurements, combined with 5" and 10" observations presented in an earlier paper, provide an opportunity to study the spatial distribution of the near-infrared emission in luminous IRAS galaxies. It is found...

Internal Extinction in Spiral Galaxies in the Near Infrared

In order to study the effects of internal extinction in spiral galaxies we search for correlations of near infrared (NIR) photometric parameters with inclination. We use data from the 2 Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) Extended Source Catalog (XSC) on 15,224 spiral galaxies for which we also have redshifts. For 3035 of the galaxies, I-band photometry is available which is included in the analysis....
